Religious Education & Youth Ministry Information
Welcome Students, Parents and Guardians,
This is St. John’s sixth year for Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation. Father Larry Olszewski and I would like to welcome back all our returning families. To all the new families joining us here at St. John’s, we are looking forward to getting to know you and your wonderful students.
All staff members and volunteers at St. John’s are here devoting their time to creating a loving environment for faith formation in our church community. We are pleased to have two new members to our staff, Fr. Louis Manzo and Terri Tagye.
Fr. Louis Manzo, c.s.c., our new assistant priest, is a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was ordained a priest in 1965. He has taught at Notre Dame International School in Rome from 1968 to 1974, at Stonehill College in MA from 1974 to 1993 and has assisted in numerous parishes throughout his priesthood.
Terri Tagye has her Masters in Religious Education and is our new coordinator for our Jr. High religious education program and coordinator for sacramental preparations. Terri also volunteers as our High School Youth Minister.
To date, we have almost 400 students enrolled in grades K - 12. We have a volunteer teacher for every grade level and in most cases team teachers and high school student assistants. We can always use more volunteers for our Jr. High and Sr. High youth programs. Please contact Terri Tagye if you are interested, 248-6383.
A catechist’s role is to lead your student to an understanding of their Catholic faith and to encourage and support them and their families in participating actively in the parish community. But remember, it is within the family that faith is nurtured and grows. “Parents are the primary educators in the faith.” (GDC255) Your role in the faith formation of your child began at baptism.
“You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are accepting in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him or her up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?” (Rite of Baptism 109) Parent involvement is highly encouraged. Please ask your student’s teacher if there is anything you can do to help or if there is anything you can bring to class. We are always looking for volunteers. Look for the volunteer sign up sheet at the registration table.
The 9:30am Mass on Sundays is our Family Mass. We would like to have the students involved in the services, i.e. Lectors, Ushers, Alter servers and/or Choir. Please let Robert McBride, our liturgy and music director, or your teachers know if your child is interested in any of these areas. Included in this packet are sign-up forms. The students will be trained in the appropriate Ministry. This is available to all boys and girls who have made their first Eucharist or older. This sign-up is not limited to those who attend the Sunday 9:30am Mass, just indicate which Mass you will be attending and prefer to serve. There is also a sign-up for younger children to be involved in the Christmas pageant.
Religious Education classes for Grades K-6th are held from Sept through May, Sunday mornings from 10:30am – 11:45am. Religious Education and Youth Ministry for grades 7th – 12th are held from Sept through May with continued activities through the summer, Sunday evenings from 6pm – 8pm. All are held at the Parish Life Center. Please check Religious Education and Youth Ministry Calendars and look in the parish bulletin.
Registration is August through early September at the Parish Life Center. Check Parish Bulletin for dates.
Late registration can take place at the Parish office Monday – Fridays from 9am – 2:00pm. Please call ahead and ask for Louise Vine. In addition, a table for late registration, (parish registration, religious education, sacramental preparation registration and tuition collection), is located in the hallway near Room 148 in the back of the Parish Life Center each Sunday at 10:45am during K-6th religious education classes.
Registration fees: Families with 1 student - $45.00, 2nd & 3rd additional sibling pays $22.00 each., and 4th sibling is free. Checks should be made out to St. John the Evangelist.
Preparation for Sacraments will begin on Sundays in the student’s age appropriate time for Religious Education. Below are listed the additional times for sessions that include the parents and/or sponsors for the appropriate Sacrament. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend all sessions.
First Reconciliation Sessions: Retreat/Session 1 - Saturday 10/13/07 - 9:00am - 1:00pm Retreat/Session 1 - Saturday 3/29/08 - 9:00am - 1:00pm Confirmation Sessions: Retreat at San Pedro Spiritual Center – Dec. 1st – 2nd
It is important, when preparing for any of the above Sacraments, to attend all sessions, retreats and service projects. If your schedule does not allow full participation in all events, consider preparing the following year when your schedule permits.
Please note that due to the fact we are a new parish adjusting to our new facility and increase in membership, there will be an adjustment period and possible changes to the schedule and or room placement.
Thank you for choosing to be a part of the religious education program here at St. John the Evangelist. God Bless,
Louise Vine |
